iGoogle Sandbox and Development Resources

Filed under: Open Social — @ 12:15 pm

Recently Barry Schwartz highlighted the new iGoogle layout, and how it has started to be released to limited users. I just wanted to add to that and mention that the new iGoogle layout and features can be seen by anyone via the iGoogle sandbox and is available to developers who request to be included. To use the sandbox and see the new layout, go here. A write up I did on the new iGoogle features in April is here The official Google announcement of the sandbox was here. The iGoogle API i

LinkedIn and Widgets

Filed under: Open Social — @ 11:06 am

LinkedIn has been pretty specific about their intentions for Open Social. They plan to have useful, business orientated widgets only. At Google I/O they also mentioned they would be revenue sharing in a “unique” way. Hmmm. To see what they said (and what all the other social networks said) about their Open Social implementations you can watch the full “Meet the Containers” session from Google I/O. But that is the future, there are a couple “widgets” that already exist for Linkedin, they aren’

Social Publishing Systems: What about We, the Participants?

Filed under: Open Social — @ 9:52 am

We’re living in a time of the greatest shift in human (and machine) connection and communication any of us over 30 years old will experience in our lifetimes. Social media is proliferating, networks of people exploding, self-publishing, microblogging and new communications channels like Twitter emerging, and for the most part, the enterprise isn’t playing in most of these areas. As a former content management systems (CMS) guy (was with Vignette during the dotcom heyday), I’m in an interestin

Goodbye Bill Gates

Filed under: Open Social — @ 1:23 pm

Dear Mr. Gates — I feel I know you well enough to call you Bill. You see, although we have never met, I feel like I owe you a huge debt of gratitude. I started loving technology while playing Pong and Space Invaders and shortly thereafter I became a BASIC programmer. First of all, thanks for ensuring this language was around and simple enough for a person to easily pick up on his own. It is unclear what the computing industry would be like if it weren’t for you and your company. You seem to ha

Do You Boil Down Or Boil Up?

Filed under: Open Social — @ 2:47 am

Boiling ideas down in advertising planning is a very popular pastime - aka reductive thinking. However, in networked media, the opposite is true. The aim is for an idea to boil up - and preferably - over. Both approaches have their attractions and are largely determined by their natural media. TV and billboards are about the big punch. The web is about seeding and weeding. These different outlooks make a huge difference when it comes to preparation. If you’ve only got one shot at gettin

Visualizing Touch Devices in Education

Filed under: Open Social — @ 8:55 pm

Took me a while before I watched this concept video about iPhone use on campus. Connected: The Movie - Abilene Christian University Sure, it’s a bit campy. Sure, some features aren’t available on the iPhone yet. But the basic concepts are pretty much what I had in mind. Among things I like in the video: The very notion of student empowerment runs at the centre of it. Many of the class-related applications presented show an interest in the constructivist dimensions of learning. Material is

Online Grant Applications

Filed under: Open Social — @ 12:10 pm

Flaw #9 from the Project Streamline report: More than 80 percent of the grantmakers who responded to our survey reported that they have taken steps to make their information gathering practices “more efficient and streamlined for nonprofit applicants.” …Many streamlining strategies have turned out to be useful to foundations and their grantees. Yet others, notably online applications and common grant applications, have produced mixed results, creating new issues for grantmakers and grantseeke
