Hackers are Social Activists mashup! - Eric Raymond vs. Bill Moyes

Filed under: Open Social — @ 5:21 am

If the Open Web is a social movement then are Hackers Social Activists? From the reaction of a number of people to that post the answer at first seems unclear. Some of those who responded shared their discomfort with the idea of being labeled a social activist. Notions of people chaining themselves to something, yelling into loudspeakers or even adopting the approach of archetype hacker activist Richard Stallman’s makes many open source supporters uneasy. I agree - but being an activist doesn

The Mic is On: It’s About Sibling Rivalries!

Filed under: Open Social — @ 7:00 pm

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different Here’s how it works. It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME. The rules are simple — be nice. There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it. We’re talking about love between… brothers and sisters, sons and daughte

Open Mic 7pm Chgo Time: Let’s Talk About Sibling Rivalries!

Filed under: Open Social — @ 2:26 pm

We sometimes have problems with folks who share our spaces. They say “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” Is that the way it was growing up for you with your siblings? We might talk about the love between brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, aunts and uncles… you get the idea, and whatever else comes up, even flamenco dancing. Oh, and bring example links to share — about sibling rivalries. The rules are simple — be nice. Do be nice. –ME “Liz” Strauss Related article What is

For some time now I’ve been talking about the need for large foundations to share their knowledge base with the general public. While some people have made this argument from the standpoint of obligations that foundations have to the public, I’ve thought that foundations will find that they are able to more effectively further their own mission by sharing their knowledge base. Since individuals give seven time more money each year than all the foundations in the country combined, it stands to r

When you run the installer, one of the questions is: Would you like to make revenue from this router? You will be paid on a 50/50 basis for anyone who uses bandwidth you donate and it will appear as a rebate on your monthly Telstra (or Optus etc) broadband bill. would you like free internet access to your mobile cell

Social networking for sports sits on an open platform

Filed under: Open Social — @ 1:17 pm

http://gasperson.com/2008/06/social-networking-for-sports-sits-on-an-open-platform/. Sportsvite.com, a kind of MySpace for ballers, exists because Steve Parker and a few friends wanted to find a better way to organize softball leagues and other casual sports teams in their New York neighborhoods. Parker, who lists badminton as a favorite sport on his Sportsvite.com profile, says he has always been an advocate of using open source, and thought it would be a great idea to build an Internet service

New Open FAST-SharePoint Search Bits Post @ MSFT Codeplex

Filed under: Open Social — @ 4:04 pm

There was a lot of discussion in the recent Enterprise 2.0 Conference posts by Bill Ives, Jevon MacDonald, and Jon Husband around issues in the deployment and management of the technology platforms for emergent 2.0 practices. As you know, we have always held that Search (the S in Andy McAfee’s SLATES model for E20) is the core “glue” in these platforms, pulling together concepts and people across the silos of project wikis, individual blogs, TownSquare-type enterprise Facebook projects, etc. S
