The world’s largest social network, MySpace, has officially opened its Application Gallery. The app promises to let you find out the “truth about yourself” and discover what other really think about you. Not far down the chart at No. 4 is Ace Texas Hold’em Poker with 86,000

Data Is Behaviour

Filed under: Open Social — @ 7:10 am

Marketeers are data hounds and view the world through a kaleidoscope of TGIs, JICREGs, TVRs, GRPs, PIs and other splendid analytical goodness. However, although very smart and helpful, these systems are still approximations (aka guess-timates) of what might be happening in a complex world. Now, as people increasingly lead their lives online, we have information about what is actually happening in a complex world. So, for example, instead of mocking-up profiles of typical customers to help g

Yahoo’s Open OS: Really, Really Open.

Filed under: Open Social — @ 6:45 pm

Larry Dignan and Dan Farber at CNET have the early scoop on Yahoo’s freshly unveiled Yahoo! Open Strategy somewhat cryptically labelled …. “Y!OS” Ari Balogh, Yahoo CTO said at the San Francisco Web 2.0 Conference today: “We are taking open to a whole other place,”… “We are rewiring Yahoo from the inside out with a developer platform that will open up the assets of Yahoo in a way never done before, making the consumer experience social throughout and provide hooks to developers.” It is too

Yahoo Announces New Open Strategy

Filed under: Open Social — @ 12:58 pm

Yahoo’s CTO Ari Balogh, opened his speech at Web 2.0 Expo speaking about about 3 big bets, being the most important starting point for the web, being a must buy advertising property and open. He says that Yahoo has been open for a long time. They have lots of open API’s. Flickr is the second largest of these. He wants to take “open” to a whole new place. He wants to open up all the assets to developers. They want to open up the social network that is Yahoo. It sounds like they have been lea

State laws apparently don’t matter anymore when it comes to regulating the police. The SCOTUS just ruled that it is entirely acceptable for the government to introduce evidence that the police obtained while conducting a search that is illegal under state law, but otherwise constitutional. See, in Virginia, there are restrictions on the books about how far you can go in a traffic stop. The officer thought he had probable cause based on the person’s behavior, even though state law said he couldn’

Video Comments Are Here: This Could Be Huge… Or a Flop

Filed under: Open Social — @ 8:17 pm

TechCrunch made the announcement today that all of its blogs will have the option for you to leave video comments via a service called Seesmic. It’s a powerful idea with a dead simple execution. As a result, comments are now a mix of text and video. Take a look. I want to be on record for saying that this could be huge despite my own personal reservations. (I’m not a fan of posting videos of myself, though perhaps I’ll be converted sooner rather than later.) The biggest real problem is that

Data Portability, Privacy, and the Emergence of the Social Web (Web 2.0 Expo)

Filed under: Open Social — @ 4:33 pm

Data Portability, Privacy, and the Emergence of the Social Web Web 2.0 Expo San Francisco, CA April 23, 2008 Download PPT (5.3 MB) I’ve been talking about opening up the social web for some time, but the world keeps changing around me, so I can never use an old talk for very long. Since Web 2.0 Expo is such a big venue (probably the biggest conference I’ve ever spoken at), and since at Plaxo we’ve recently come to a new degree of clarity on how we see the emerging social web ecosystem emer

BarCamp Boston 3

Filed under: Open Social — @ 2:32 pm

Shimon Rura’s email today reminded me that BarCamp Boston is fast approaching again. Third week in May we should easily avoid the snowstorm which put something of a crimp in BarCamp Boston 2. In case you’ve been somehow able to escape the increasing presence of *camps, BarCamp is one of the earliest and one of the best. It was on the occasion of BarCamp Boston (the original) that I started blogging, though to be fair you shouldn’t hold them responsible for that. Here’s an hCalendar microf

These planetariums in SL are the work of Magnus Zeisig (Magnuz Binder) a freelance SL builder located in Stockholm, Sweden, dubbed “one of Sweden’s most talented programmers.” I acquired the 3D display of the galaxies within 500 million light years from us pictured above for my small plot of land in Second Life.
