Open Source “Social App Server” Might Crack Garden Walls?

Filed under: Open Social — @ 9:20 am

From right here in Philly’s backyard, Ringside Networks came out of stealth mode yesterday to launch the first open source “social application server.” And what is that exactly? It’s the software guts of a social network that you can use behind your own firewall, old school style, to build social networking “stuff” into your own site. Companies that want to build social applications (for runners sharing times at Runlicious) or socially aware marketing programs (like Jeep owners sharing pictures

Arseblog, Modern Marketing & We Think

Filed under: Open Social — @ 6:38 am

One or two readers of this blog may have seen me at live events combining web strategy with my passion for Arsenal Football Club. Sometimes I read out two match reports about the same game, one from Arsenal.com, the official, but dry, website and one from Arseblog, an unofficial, but massively popular site. The intention is to demonstrate how restrictive official-ese can be in networked media. Last week I noticed that Charles Leadbetter, who came to an event I spoke at last year, had includ

Google I/O Event

Filed under: Open Social — @ 10:21 pm

This is kinda a no brainer I will be there and I am relieved it fits my trail schedule. This event is developer oriented and costs 300-400 dollars depending when you register. Get all the details at the Google I/O site.

Three Underrepresented Gadget Skills

Filed under: Open Social — @ 8:48 pm

The gadget/widget world is still young, and people are starting to “get it”, there is clearly a future. The core skill set of anyone wanting to be in gadgets is Javascript/Ajax, HTML, and PHP. In addition to those skills, micro design skills and designers able to minimize file sizes are useful as well, but what’s worth looking at beyond the core set of skills? I see three areas where there seems to be great potential, but are not very widespread yet (even though some are ancient). 1) Canvas

The Mic Is On: We’re Talking about the Law of Attraction

Filed under: Open Social — @ 7:02 pm

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different Here’s how it works. It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME. The rules are simple — be nice. There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it. It’s the Law . . . Wear a “kick me” sign and sooner or later . . . some

Economists Social Network With Thunderbird.

Filed under: Open Social — @ 5:03 pm

I read a nice article about social networking business on the economist. It was an enlightening read about online business. I just wrote about Google complaining about “Social Network Sites Do Not See Our Ads” and perhaps that all does not fit in the same old mold. Yes the cartoonist at the Economist also need change. These days we don’t struggle against walls that prevent us from freedom, we break them!, remember Berlin wall, or the Firefly powered “The Wall” by Pink Floyd or similar. This is s

Open Mic 7pm Chgo Time: We’re Talking about the Law of Attraction

Filed under: Open Social — @ 2:50 pm

It’s the Law . . . Wear a “kick me” sign and sooner or later . . . someone will. We’ll be talking about whether we believe your intentions and actions bring things into our life. Can we make a positive life by believing in it? Do we really intend our future? Do we attract the people who come to us? Is all of this law of attraction “bull puckey”? Oh, and bring example links to share — about the law of attraction. The rules are simple — be nice. Do be nice. –ME “Liz” Strauss Related a

Open Social Foundation Launched By Google, Yahoo, Myspace

Filed under: Open Social — @ 12:21 pm

A new social networking alliance will include internet powerhouses Google, Yahoo, and Myspace in an “Open Social Foundation”. Facebook’s absence from this list is something of a social networking elephant in the room as Facebook is generally considered the key innovator and eventual market leader in the social networking space. The Open Social Foundation will, according to the Yahoo Press release today, work to ensure: … the neutrality and longevity of OpenSocial as an open, community-gove

Yahoo! — Putting the “Open” in OpenSocial

Filed under: Open Social — @ 10:26 am

Great news for Yahoo and even better news for OpenSocial, possibly even eclipsing the coup that was getting Myspace in. Given the momentum that OpenSocial has right now in terms of container support, it’s hard to imagine that much will happen to slow it down this year. Competing initiatives, like Insoshi, just don’t have the geography coverage that Google does and in that absence of homegrown initiatives at any of the big container partners, it’s likely they will throw their full weight behind
