See You At Drupal Camp

Filed under: Open Social — @ 9:07 pm

I’m going to be at DrupalCampNYC 4 tomorrow in Brooklyn. I’m going to learn more about this platform that is getting a higher profile every day. I hope to turn some of that knowledge around to you. Some of that turnaround will be more immediate and some will be turned around over time. I’ll try to phone in a report on my Utterz channel and maybe upload a picture or two there. I’m also bringing video and audio capture tools. One topic of discussion that I hope to engage in revolves around Chris

Open Source Rules Nitobi Survey–Not a platform of choice though

Filed under: Open Social — @ 10:45 pm

Darren Barefoot and Vancouver-based Nitobi posted a survey recently asking developers about their choices of development platforms. While there wasn’t an overwhelming platform of choice, open-source tools ruled the day: The interesting aspect is that there’s no one dominant language or platform. What does dominate the survey is open source, which comprises 80% of the platform responses, 84% of the Ajax framework responses, and 59% of the development tools responses. With the tools, Dreamweave

Even IT Execs Are Feeling The Hurt By Ignoring Social Media

Even IT Execs Are Feeling The Hurt By Ignoring Social Media March 27, 2008 9:33 PM Posted by Mitch Joel “Not embracing social networking is like saying I’d rather hide my money under the mattress than put it in a bank. Companies make a big mistake when they prohibit these tools out of the sheer fear of what employees will say when they communicate with one another.” That was one of the lead quotes from the CIO article, Ignoring Web 2.0 Will Cost You, by Sandra Gittlen from Network World. Don’t Make Me Decide Yet: Lowering the Barrier to Entry

Filed under: Open Social — @ 12:55 pm

A few days ago Josh Porter was tweeting about the notion of “fatigue points”: I think it’s a very useful concept, pointing out that people’s decisions aren’t binary: it isn’t a single yes/no decision but an active, ongoing negotiation, which determines which services you use and don’t use. You can also think about the barrier to entry of a new user in a similar fashion. Any time you try out a new application or service there are a few barriers, and whatever the application developer can do

Launching clickpass: the inside story

Filed under: Open Social — @ 10:32 am

Co-founder Peter Nixey just wrote up a riveting account of the recent launch of his startup clickpass for Vitamin. It\’s a must-read. Plaxo was one of clickpass\’s launch partners, so the story features a few cameos from yours truly. It will be hard to forget waking up in an Austin hotel around 9am on the day of the launch, eyes blurry from a heavy night of partying (er, that is, \”networking\”), glancing over at the alarm clock, and then jolting out of bed with the cold shock of realization:

When the walls come down, will a business be left behind?

Filed under: Open Social — @ 8:29 am

The Economist has two very interesting articles out on social networking  - Break down these walls, and Everywhere and Nowhere. The first focuses on the notion that social networking should follow the now well-trodden path on the Internet, where open standards trump “walled gardens.” They make a good point that companies like Facebook and Second Life look a lot like AOL in 1994, in terms of being closed worlds based on proprietary standards. The hope would be that, with history as a guide, the

Did we find collective intelligence in our survey respondents, or something else

With all the buzz around OpenSocial, it’s easy to get lost in hype. While we were at SXSW we caught up with Kevin Marks, a man with more techno-credibility than you can shake a stick at. He’s currently working on OpenSocial for Google, and he’s got a lot to say about the concepts behind organizing and connecting the diaspora which is

Chris Pirillo of Lockergnome announces Drupal-powered Community Participation Platform, hackfest in Seattle

Filed under: Open Social — @ 10:57 am

Chris Pirillo is picking up the torch first raised by Marc Canter over 4 years ago: open community platforms available for everyone, powered by Drupal. Chris is a long time friend and colleague, and it’s great to see him stepping up and saying that he wants to make an out-of-the-box install profile for social communities — blogging, SEO, multimedia, content licensing. And the thing is, the pieces ARE there. It just needs some effort to put it all together and integrated, and that first run ex
