Open Mic 7pm Chgo Time: PC or MAC?

Filed under: Open Social — @ 1:43 pm

The age-old question — PC, MAC, or Something other? We might talk about great features, what each does best, which laptop for school or business, who’ll own the market in 2018, or whatever else comes up, even flamenco dancing. Oh, and bring PC or Mac links to share! The rules are simple — be nice. Do be nice. –ME “Liz” Strauss Related article What is Tuesday Open Comment Night? Blogging, instant messaging for internal groups, constant communication from online IM’s to cell phone text messages. We all do it, utilizing whatever we can to remain in contact with people. Henrik Ingo - Ethics, freedom, and trust

Filed under: Open Social — @ 7:11 am

The great achievement of the Web 2.0 phenomenon lies, for Henrik Ingo, in that it has significantly grown the mass of users who are at least instinctively coming to appreciate the joys of sharing (Youtube), communication (forums, Facebook) or access to information (blogs). The time has not (yet) arrived when everyone would be an […]

The Archeology and Future of Software Design: Meeting Grady Booch

Filed under: Open Social — @ 6:00 pm

Mirror Worlds will transform the meaning of “computer.” Our dominant metaphor since 1950 or thereabouts, “the electronic brain,” will go by the boards. Instead people will talk about crystal balls, telescopes, stained glass windows, wine, poetry, or whatever - things that make you see vividly. (Mirror Worlds, David Gelertner 1992) As the meaning of “computer” transforms so will software. Gelertner talks about software as an embodied information machine. And, as virtual worlds come of age so

State of the Blog 2008 Posted on: January 28th, 2008 by Matt Raymond As the president prepares to take his annual look ahead in the State of the Union, I thought I might do the same for this blog and get feedback from readers. Our friends at DipNote (the State Department’s official blog) did just that a few weeks ago: Since launch, we have made a strong attempt to get you on-the-ground blogging and will continue to strive for more of this in 2008. Also in the new year, we plan on addressin

Mhambi’s South Africa 2007

Filed under: Open Social — @ 9:50 am

Mhambi is very late with this posting, my summary of Mhambi 2007. Last year I described 2006 as a watershed year for South Africa in my posting Mhambi’s 2006. A year in which open debate returned to South Africa. If you remember, this was not because of a new found commitment to democracy amongst our ruling political class, but because of the battle for control of the ANC and the state between the Mbeki and Zuma camps. So 2007 started off with many of these 2006 debates carrying into the new

WordPress.Com Going 3G

Filed under: Open Social — @ 4:50 am

Yeah.. It takes a while for Wordpress.com to upgrade the free space they given to everybody who use wordpress.com services. Everyone’s free upload space has been increased 60 times from 50 MB to 3,000 MB. To get the same amount of space at our nearest competitor, Typepad, you’d pay at least $300 a year. Blogger only gives you 1GB. We’re doing the same thing for free. It’s a good news to everybody as Web 3.0 is one of the best thing Internet could gives to everyone these day. For me, I ha

The Coming of the Cloud, Networked Knowledge Work and New Business Logic

Here below is an excerpt from and a link to a report just published by the recent Aspen Institute’s Communications and Society program. In a previous post I mentioned a growing awareness of the impact of the interconnected digital infrastructure and digital natives on the Enterprise 2.0 market.  The publication of this Aspen Institute report is to me just one more piece of evidence that it’s real and growing … and it’s a credible source (though not quite a tangible case study David Bollier

2008 Horizon Report

2008 Horizon Report Jan 26th, 2008 by John Connell Judy O’Connell alerted me to the publication of the 2008 Horizon Report, the highly fruitful joint venture between Educause and the new media consortium, part of the output from, “…a five-year qualitative research effort that seeks to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have a large impact on teaching, learning, or creative expression within learning-focused organizations.” The 2007 Report offered immense value for any
