Facebook vs. Google? Advantage: Google

Filed under: Open Social — @ 6:32 am

Filed under: Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT) [IMG ]According to a recent piece in the Wall Street Journal [a paid publication], there is some frustration among loyal Facebook users. In the web site’s search for monetization, there are some new features that do things like track user behavior off of Facebook.com. The hope is that this will help to create improved targeting for advertising messages. But, it’s also raising some privacy concerns. So, might this be an opening for Google (Nasdaq: G

Plaxo Pulse Open Social Stats = Bullshit

Filed under: Open Social — @ 4:00 am

I was very pleasantly surprised to hear about the great success that Plaxo achieved with using OpenSocial. The graph was testimony to great things. [IMG PlaxoSocialGraph] It meant that Open Social was a success! And that if we adopt it in our social software that it would be just as a success as well. In trawling through Alexa though, we can see this: [IMG] I’d like to know now, what does that drop off mean? They’re dropping off to nearly the exact same number that they were at. Sure, the

10 Worst Consumer Tech Trends - Education Edition

Filed under: Open Social — @ 10:12 pm

PC World has released an instantly popular list of the “10 Worst Consumer Tech Trends“. As soon as I read the list, it was easy to see the parallels in education. Thus, here’s my educational take on the list. 10. Close Source Technology - I’ve been an advocate of FLOSS for quite a few years now, in fact, my dissertation had much to say about the topic. While we are nowhere near a world where Linux is ubiquitous, we’ve made a lot of progress through Firefox, Open Office and newer software like

Global Communities in The Imagination Age

Filed under: Open Social — @ 3:30 pm

[IMG ritaandjoshuapost.jpg] The serendipity of Second Life has worked its magic again to bring together an extraordinary team with a new vision. In a search that looks inward and outward, Rita J. King and Joshua Fouts are asking questions about what it means to be a conscientious global citizen, and the role of virtual worlds in creating global communities. Recently, I met with Rita J. King, CEO and Creative Director of Dancing Ink Productions (a.k.a Eureka Dejavu in Second Life) whose work a

[IMG IAB Online Advertising 2007]The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) announced that Internet advertising revenues [IMG]exceeded $5.2 billion for the third quarter of 2007, which represents yet another milestone for the online world and a $1.1 billion increase, or 25.3 percent, over Q3 2006. Let’s be honest, the Microsoft’s Zune portable digital music player hasn’t quite taken off the way that Balmer and the boys in Redmond had hoped but they’re not thr

Facebook may end up carrying Google adverts

Filed under: Open Social — @ 10:19 am

Part of Facebooks game plan seems to have been to create an illusion of openness while at the same time ensuring that their platform is actually closed to anyone who could tread on their toes in the areas that drive their revenue. Now admittedly they don’t have much revenue right now but that is going to change very soon with all the new advertising options available to brands who want to be promoted on the social network. So with this increasing revenue should come an increasingly closed approa

Word of mouth marketing to grow rapidly

Filed under: Open Social — @ 8:03 am

A study from PQ Media shows that word-of-mouth marketing has grown by 35.9% in 2006 (to $981m) and is expected to be well over $1B in 2007 (maybe as much as $1.3B). Now, over 90% of word-of-mouth marketing is offline still but that’s changing and with the new opportunities for communication and engaging your customers on the web I’d expect the shift from off to online to be pretty dramatic over the next year. In 2006, word-of-mouth marketing was still the smallest of the main segments of market

DIY Planning Templates

Filed under: Open Social — @ 2:02 pm

[IMG DIY Templates]I’m a complete freak for organizational tools. I don’t subscribe to a particular system (such as Franklin Covey, which my friend Rick has mastered), but I do give a lot of thought to ease of use and effectiveness, especially as compared to slickness and coolness. So I was a little too excited at running across D.I.Y. Templates, which features a directory of To Do List templates. They range from the quirky (the note card template seen here) to more complicated layouts that i
